01 // MANIFESTO SUBTRACTIVE METHOD

Our Philosophy.

Subtractive rigor is not merely an aesthetic preference — it is an ethical posture. In a world faster, louder, and more confident in its half-truths than anything before, restraint is no longer optional. It is the practice that must be trained deliberately.

THE POSTURE

We design work people keep on their desks for decades.

We run the material research and visual architecture that stakeholders remember years later, because it tells them something undeniably true about themselves and the people they serve.

When tools are faster than ever — anyone can prompt a screen or layout in minutes — the only difference in who you work with is how they think: design is a discipline of thought. The organisations that will matter in the next decade are the ones who actually understand what they stand for, eliminating the superfluous to protect human attention.

We do this with top researchers, typographers, bookbinders, and creative technologists around the world. We practice courage in physical artifacts and digital systems alike.

THE FOUR LAWS

Laws of Restraint.

01

Design is a discipline of thought

When digital tools are faster than ever and anyone can produce a visual layout in seconds, the only genuine differentiator is how deeply you think. We treat typography, negative space, and material as instruments of cognition.

02

Restraint is a trained practice

Most agencies add until a deadline forces them to stop. We begin with everything stripped away, adding only what cannot be removed without collapse. Subtractive rigor is active, deliberate discipline.

03

Permanence over ephemeral novelty

We do not design for the algorithm of the week. We design monographs that museum curators preserve decades later, and brand identities that survive contact with the real world.

04

Tactile mass & digital rigor

We do not accept the false divide between physical paper and computational software. Both are architectures that organize human stillness, focus, and contemplation.

FOUNDER STORY

The analyst and the artist.

“Elena is a force of nature” is what clients and curators repeat most often. There are eighteen years of design leadership behind that reputation: directing visual communication at top Swiss studios and Kyoto ateliers, always working at the intersection of human stillness and material precision.

My purpose is to make things that change how people see themselves. I do this by helping institutions, founders, and teams make the invisible visible: the hidden essence, the tactile barriers, the quiet stories, and the structural beauty shaping human lives. Once visible, I help turn that insight into better monographs, clearer brand systems, and braver creative action.

I think of myself as the analyst and the artist working as one instrument. I’ve never had to choose between mathematical rigor and tactile play, because for me the rigor is the play. Give me complexity to make beautiful and pure, and you’ll get our best work.

Trained at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), fellow of Echizen paper craft, and alumna of Harvard Business School Executive Education, I speak regularly at international design symposia and lecture across Europe and Japan. Most people wait for perfect conditions before they begin; I learned early that clarity is forged through subtractive courage.
